THE TRUTH ABOUT THE VAMPIRE FACIAL
All you need to know about the infamous ‘Vampire Facial’
In the age of Instagram and reality TV stars, it’s no surprise that people are willing to go to the extremes to look good. Remember that infamous “Vampire Facial” made famous by Kim Kardashian? We heard it was painful. We saw a face full of blood. It certainly looked nothing short of a horror story. Of all the facials available, it looks to be the most painful and extreme. However, we’re going to set the record straight about what a Vampire Facial really entails.
So, what is the Vampire Facial? The Vampire Facial involves using special PRP techniques to rejuvenate the skin and give long term benefits. PRP stands for platelet-rich-plasma and is found within our blood. The plasma contains growth factors which enables our bodies to heal and regenerate, hence why it is becoming popular within both skin rejuvenation and hair loss.
How does it work? To begin the procedure, a small amount of your blood is collected (similar to a routine blood test) and placed into a centrifuge. Inside the centrifuge, the blood is separated into; red blood cells, platelet poor plasma, and platelet rich plasma. The PRP (platelet rich plasma) is then injected back into the affected area using a special dermapen or applied topically using a Dermaroller – which involves creating lots of tiny puncture holes in the skin. The PRP stimulates your natural collagen and elastin fibres to promote cell turnover, giving you a completely rejuvenated appearance. The holes help the growth factors and other nutrients get into deeper layers of the skin. A topical anaesthetic can be applied if necessary. Whilst this may sound extreme, it’s actually a relatively simple procedure and due to it involving using only your own blood, it’s suitable for just about anyone.
The benefits to your skin Immediately after the procedure, you will notice that your skin is softer to the touch. The nature of the procedure being deep-targeting and the stimulation of your collagen within the skin means that the effects are longer lasting than a standard facial.
Dermatologists across the globe have agreed that the Vampire Facial carries many benefits such as; Reduces acne scarring Reduces pore size Tightens and tones your skin Reduces fine lines & wrinkles Replaces/stimulates collagen & skin volume Reduces the appearance of Rosacea and Hyperpigmentation So, although Vampire’s may not be real, the benefits that the Vampire Facial has on your skin are! What looks like an absolute nightmare is actually one of the beauty industry’s most popular treatments—improving skin texture, reducing wrinkles, plumping sagging skin, diminishing scars, and eliminating deep creases. Best of all it is offered locally at Dayton Skin. So let’s talk about PRP facials at Dayton Skin Care and all of the glorious benefits. In a nutshell, PRP facials use a combination of Microneedling and Platelets from your own blood to stimulate new collagen production and improve healing time. This is a non-surgical procedure that can provide amazing results. Let’s go into more detail. WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING? Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that’s primarily used to minimize the signs of aging. During a standard session, a dermatologist or aesthetician uses a special device with needles to prick the skin and stimulate new collagen production. WHAT IS PRP? We all have platelets in our blood. PRP is a 3-step procedure that involves having your blood: Drawn from your arm Placed into a machine that separates the platelets from the rest of your blood Re-injected into you (only the part of your blood that contains a high concentration of platelets) Not only is PRP used to treat signs of aging Orthopedic surgeons use PRP to help athletes recover more quickly after an injury. In dermatology, PRP is being used as a treatment for hair loss. PRP may also speed up wound healing. (America Academy of Dermatology) PRP to treat signs of aging combines Microneedling and Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) into one heck of a skin rejuvenating procedure! At Dayton Skin Care the process involves extracting blood from the patient’s arm and using a centrifuge to separate the platelets and plasma from the red blood cells. From there, the Collagen Pin microneedling device infuses skin with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) that stimulates collagen and elastin fibers to promote cell turnover for your most brilliant complexion through a series of thousands of tiny pinpricks.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR APPOINTMENT? Before Arrive at the office at least 15 minutes before the appointment. This will allow time to finish up any last-minute paperwork or payments. Our aesthetician will begin by cleaning the skin and applying a topical anesthetic. This will need to set for at least 30 minutes before microneedling begins. The actual procedure involves two steps. First, a syringe of blood will be drawn, usually from the arm, by one of our medical professionals while your face is numbing. The blood is then put into a centrifuge, which separates the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) from other components of the blood. Second is the microneedling portion which lasts 30 minutes, depending on the areas treated. During this, our aesthetician will use the Collagen Pin microneedling device on the desired areas of your face. The PRP (plasma) is placed on the face while the microneedling device glides over the top of the PRP creating small controlled micropunctures on the desired areas, allowing for penetration of the PRP into the skin.
Once the procedure is finished, the aesthetician will massage any leftover PRP onto the skin to optimize absorption.
DOES IT HURT? Let’s not forget about the numbing! All patients receive a topical anesthetic 30 minutes prior to the session commencing. So the pain is minimal. Some have reported a sensation like light sandpaper moving across the skin. WHAT TO EXPECT DURING RECOVERY? Recovery for this procedure is relatively minimal. Most patients can go back to school or work the next day if you wish. There may still be some redness and other signs of minor irritation, but avoid applying too many products to your skin. Simply cleanse once a day and moisturize as needed. If desired, follow with a lightweight foundation or powder to minimize redness and follow up with our recommended products for the best and fastest healing. Avoid alcohol-based products and exfoliants during the recovery stage. Proper sun protection is also very important. Until the skin has completely healed, avoid rigorous activities that might cause excessive sweating and heat production. Examples include running, playing tennis, and heavy workouts. Sweating may cause additional irritation, and rigorous activities may increase the risk of swelling or bruising. This usually should be avoided for at least 72 hours after your treatment. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS? After treatment, many notice immediate results, which will continue to improve over the next few days and weeks. As the body’s natural collagen production is now stimulated, you should see the texture and quality of your skin continue to improve for up to six months. Recovery time is about one to three days depending on how aggressive the treatment. While one treatment may be all that is needed, some people may desire additional treatments for further amplification. The effects of this treatment can last for 1-2 years. It is recommended to have maintenance treatments every year. You will be provided with all the information you need about caring for your skin and additional treatments after your PRP microneedling session at Dayton Skin Care.

HOW DOES IT WORK?When you come in for your appointment, we’ll discuss your goals and then we’ll get started by prepping and cleansing your skin and pinpoint areas on your face that will receive special attention. After a simple blood draw, the PRP will be isolated using a special centrifuge. Working with my highly trained nurses, I’ll apply a topical anesthesia cream to ensure the procedure is as pain-free as possible. And then I’ll use a professional micro-needling pen with hundreds of microneedles to create tiny pricks on the skin. PRP will be applied over your entire face and neck and I’ll pay special attention to key areas, such as laugh lines, scars or crow’s feet. We also reserve PRP for injection into under-eye hollows. Unlike many other clinics where aestheticians are performing this procedure, I work alongside registered nurses.
All of this will happen in about 45 minutes! You will experience some redness and blotchiness for 24 hours after the procedure - but you can return to work with minimal makeup and no one will be the wise. You might also experience some dryness and sloughing of the skin after approximately one week. Soon after, however, you’ll notice visibly improved skin tone.
NOT ALL PRP IS CREATED EQUALLYMy predominant goal is providing the best possible care for my patients - so I spend a great deal of time researching the best solutions. The PRP protocol I selected is the most advanced, effective solution I could find - using a centrifuge that produces plasma that is densely filled with platelets - 8-10 times more so than average plasma found in the body.
When it comes to PRP systems, many medi-spa’s and aesthetics clinics aren’t providing FDA-approved treatments - rather they are using gel tube kits or even making their own “poor man’s PRP” - essentially drawing out plasma and calling it PRP. While these offerings might be more cost-effective - they are much less effective, providing only two times the amount of growth factors.
WHAT KIND OF RESULTS ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?A recent study reported that PRP therapy is a safe and effective procedure for facial skin rejuvenation, resulting in an 89% improvement in collagen density. When you compare micro-needling with PRP to micro-needling alone, there is a 200% increase in collagen production. If you want to learn more about PRP, I explained it in greater detail in this blog post.
You will continue to see improvements in your skin for 2–3 months. If you are looking for a general collagen boost, one facial a quarter should do the trick. If you’re hoping to treat an acne scar or want to optimize the treatments, you can consider a package of three Vampire Facials (once a month for three months) and then talk with me about an annual maintenance schedule.
